Psalm 23 Meaning: What 'The Lord Is My Shepherd' Really Says

"The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want." Eleven words that have steadied people through grief, fear, and the ordinary weight of being human for three thousand years. But what does Psalm 23 actually mean — and why does it still land so hard today?

Psalm 23 is a psalm of David, written by a man who had literally been a shepherd before he was a king. He isn't reaching for a poetic metaphor he read somewhere. He's describing a job he had done — the long nights, the predators, the responsibility for animals that cannot protect themselves — and turning it around: this is what God is to me.

"I shall not want" — the line people misread

It doesn't mean you'll never desire anything. It means you will not lack what you truly need. A shepherd's sheep don't strategize about tomorrow's grass. They're led to it. The verse is an argument against the low, constant hum of anxiety — the sense that it's all on you, that if you stop holding it together everything falls apart.

David's claim is that it isn't all on you. You are led, not driven.

Green pastures and dark valleys

The psalm doesn't pretend the road is easy. It walks straight through "the valley of the shadow of death" — and the promise isn't that you'll avoid the valley, but that you won't walk it alone: "for You are with me." That's the whole hinge of the psalm. Comfort isn't the absence of the dark. It's presence in it.
