Bible Verses About Faith (and What It Really Means)

July 25, 2026 · 5 min read

Faith gets used to mean "believing hard enough." The Bible means something sturdier: confidence placed in someone trustworthy, especially about what you can't yet see. Here are Bible verses about faith, and the meaning behind the word.

Hebrews gives the closest thing to a definition: "faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." Not blind — assured. It rests on a track record, not a wish.

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.Hebrews 11:1
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith.Ephesians 2:8
Have faith in God... believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.Mark 11:22-24
Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.Romans 10:17
For we walk by faith, not by sight.2 Corinthians 5:7

Faith is a walk, not a leap

The Bible pairs faith with movement more than with feeling — which is why "walk by faith, not by sight" captures it so well. Faith is the next step taken in trust, then the next. It grows by use, like a muscle.
